The Easy Tapper EZ-6.7S Hot Tapping Machine is ideal for petroleum, oil, gas, hydronic heating and cooling applications, water, steam, air and various other fluids where the main line pressure operates at a maximum of 600 PSI. An air hydraulic or electric drill motor can be attached to the back end of the cutter shaft to rotate the cutter. forward pressure for the cutter is applied by rotating the spindle. The spindle feature allows the operator to determine the best feed rate. The equipment is precision machined so the cutter holds its linear position into the cut, thereby preventing the cutter from jumping forward into the cut and overloading or locking in place.

NOTE: This machine is very fast and easy to use. The short overall length allows for taps in confined spaces.

Text Box: HOW TO USE YOUR
 EASY TAPPERTM MODEL EZ-6.7S
HOT TAPPING MACHINE

      1. Verify the source, destination, type, contents, and pressure of the line you are about to tap. Note: Maximum tapping pressure for the
Model EZ-6.7S is 600 P.S.I.G. at 100 degrees F.
      2. A Tapping saddle of proper size can be tightened on to the main line. (In some cases a ‘thread-o-let’ or malleable iron nipple can be arc welded to the main line).
      3. A short nipple is then threaded into the tapping saddle.
      4. A ‘full port’ ball valve is then threaded onto the short nipple. Note: Gate valves are not recommended in this case, because shavings from the drilling process tend to collect in the gate chamber, preventing the gate from closing all the way.
      5. The EZ-6.7S Hot Tapping Machine ships ready to use, by first installing 2 strips of pure graphite packing under the packing nut at the back of the machine front. Install the second strip with the joining seam on the opposite side from the first strip, to create a better seal. Grease has been factory installed in the bearing box, and an o-ring seal for the drive shaft has also been factory installed. Additional packing can be added at any time, even during the tapping process, simply by withdrawing the drive shaft and cutter back out of the branch line valve and then closing the branch line valve while packing is installed. To add packing, loosen the packing nut and install as listed at the beginning of section 5 (above).
      6. Now select the proper cutter, arbor and pilot bit, assemble, and install the hexagon arbor shank into the hexagon receiver (coupler), on the forward end of the drive shaft.
Note: refer to the cutter information on the back side of these operating instructions for cutter size and recommended cutting RPM’s. The end of the pilot bit should be positioned to penetrate the wall thickness of the main line before the cutter teeth engage the wall of the main line. When using the Easy Tapper™ ‘coupon retaining pilot bit’, the spring-steel wire should pass through the wall of the main line before the cutter teeth begin cutting. The cutter and the pilot should now be tightened securely to the drive shaft.
      7. At this point it is a good idea to verify that the cutter will slip through the branch line ‘full port’ ball valve unrestricted.
      8. A measurement should be taken to determine how far the travel will be to complete the cut, and the back section of the machine should be marked to insure the proper cutter travel. Main line diameter and wall thickness are important factors. Occasionally a deeper cutter is required to be sure that the entire coupon will be able to load into the cutter.
      9. Now the EZ-6.7S tapping machine can be threaded onto the branch line ball valve by using the proper sized adapter found in the Easy Tapper™ kit. Note: All threads off of the main line, and including adapter threads to the EZ-6.7S tapping machine should have thread sealing compound or teflon tape applied to them. A pressure test can be run to prove the sealing integrity of the connection to main line, the valve and the tapping machine. An inert gas or liquid should be used with a pressure gauge. This is also a good time to adjust the packing nut to insure a proper seal.
      10. A garden hose (or the like) can be connected to the side outlet ball valve located on the EZ-6.7S tapping machine. The side outlet valve can be opened during the tapping process, directing shavings to an approved receptacle.
      11. An electric, air powered, or hydraulic motor can now be hooked up to the end of the drive shaft. Rotating the spindle arms at the back of the machine will advance the cutter towards the wall of the main line. Before drilling, verify that the cutter easily moves into position against the main line without resistance. Also, verify that the length of the drive shaft will be adequate to fully penetrate the wall of the main line.
      12. You are now ready to drill into the main line. Start the drill momentarily to verify proper rotation (clockwise on the main). By applying a constant even pressure and rotating the drill at the recommended speed for the material that you are drilling into, you should be able to penetrate the wall of the main line with a minimal amount of effort. When the main line has been penetrated, the cutter should then be withdrawn back through the branch line ‘full port’ ball valve (by having the machine side outlet valve open during the tapping process, the associated piping and fittings should remain free of shavings from the drilling process). The branch line ball valve can be closed, and the tapping machine disconnected from the branch line ball valve. The tapping process is now complete.
